The proposed development has consolidated two sites in the Melbourne CBD – 141 La Trobe Street and 25 Bennetts Lane. The rectangular site has a distinctive location that spans from the busy La Trobe Street through to the pedestrian orientated Bennetts Lane.

The 42 Level development creates a clear transition between La Trobe Street and Bennetts Lane by connecting these two thoroughfares with an activated pedestrian linkage at ground level. This fine grain laneway pays homage to what was once the location of Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, and is accessible to everyone 24 hours a day.

The design approach has focused on creating an engaging Eastern façade design creating uninterrupted views to Carlton Gardens and beyond. The crystalline façade generates a movement and rhythm that is constantly changing from sunrise to sunset, while maintaining the same slab profile for uncomplicated constructability. The robust podium design has a contrasting architectural language to the light glazed tower which grounds the building to the urban fabric of La Trobe Street.
