A responsive, inclusive space to help travellers who are neurodivergent

A pioneering project designed to enhance the travel experience for those with diverse spatial needs, Plus Architecture collaborated closely with Perth Airport’s internal and external stakeholders to design the airport’s first Sensory Room, located airside at Terminal 1.

Created specifically for neurodivergent travellers, the Sensory Room draws inspiration from successful sensory rooms in U.S. airports. It incorporates insular nooks for retreat, contemplative shared spaces, and organic forms to accommodate various sensory needs.

The space features an intuitive layout, with biophilic design principles and rounded shapes that create a calming, womb-like environment, welcoming individuals of all ages. Beanbags, interactive portals, and muted colour palettes cater to both adults and children, while extensive upholstery enhances safety and acoustic comfort.

As the first sensory room of its kind in Australia, this innovative space sets a new standard for inclusive public amenities, promoting more accessible and empathetic travel experiences. The Sensory Room at Perth Airport exemplifies the value of responsive, inclusive design in transforming the way we travel.
