Plus is currently involved in the design and delivery of three National Storage Centres across Auckland ranging from four to six storeys and offering between 350 to 740 storage units across various sizes along with associated visitor and customer amenities.
The design brief for the centres called for secure and safe internal storage facilities presented in an elegant and well-proportioned building form whilst also portraying clear brand identity.
Maintaining a square form, the buildings are designed to blend and respond to local context. Combining a simple and cost effective, yet refined, materials palette with a dynamic form, the design achieves an elegant contextual response to the site and building typologies that complements the existing streetscape conditions.
The self-storage building typology is usually monotonous and internally focussed with limited interaction to the street. With the design created by Plus, the cladding of the buildings have been raised off the ground level providing pedestrian interaction, increased visual permeability through clear cladding and activation of the main street frontage.
Port of Auckland Facility
CLIENT | POAL
STATUS | In progress
LOCATION | Auckland, NZ
Plus are currently appointed by Port of Auckland to master plan and develop concepts for the POAL 30-year master plan. The scope of work includes the concept development of the new Port administration building, automated straddle carrier hanger and maintenance facility and a multi-level car holding facility.
The car holding facility is the first project to be delivered as part of the POAL 30-year plan (Stage 1). Plus produced many feasibility studies to help the client understand building location optimisation, access and circulation efficiencies and capacity options. Key drivers were maximising car park numbers (initially 4,500 cars prior to government budget cuts) with quickest and shortest access and circulation routes.
Stage two is a multi-functional facility to house the automated control centre to administrate the port’s fleet of new drone shipping container cranes.
Stage three involves the design of a green park overlay along the length of the Port to allow for better integration with the city proper. With this Ports unique location close to the CBD, Plus has designed a green, usable space to soften the transition between city and port.
Industry Business Hub
CLIENT | MAB
STATUS | Complete (2011)
LOCATION | South Melbourne, VIC
Industry Business Hub is an inspired new commercial precinct that epitomizes the cutting-edge in contemporary workspace design and modern urban life. Offering an impressive selection of flexible workspaces and poised on the edge of the CBD and surrounding inner-city precincts, Industry Business Hub locates and connects its residents to the heart of it all.
Inspired by the warehouse studios of New York’s Meatpacking District, yet transformed into something truly ‘Melburnian’, the spaces feature exposed ceilings, generous volumes and polished concrete floors. The open plan design of warehouses with exposed concrete and services is slick yet edgy and provides a space that is ideal for creative professionals.
With the construction budget relatively limited, this forced the design team to deal with basic elemental components, materials and recycling wherever possible.
