The Moonah Links Cluhbouse showcases the wide-reaching design ability from Plus in delivering buildings that are both striking and functional. Designed for a visionary client who sought to push the boundaries of typical clubhouse design, Plus were encouraged to design a contemporary clubhouse which featured both efficient spatial planning and a warm, inviting atmosphere.
The Moonah Links Clubhouse is a wonderfully environmentally sensitive building that lightly sits on top of a hill overlooking the undulating sand dunes forming the golf course. With classic symmetry and balanced contemporary forms, the clubhouse is defined by its statement veranda made using beautiful timber paneling that opens out onto the lush, landscaped gardens. The movement of the inclined columns is inspired by the swing movement of golf training videos.
The materials palette starts with a stone-faced plinth, battered textured precast walls and includes spotted gum timber cladding for the feature entries. Internally, the space is organized in such a way to maximise the efficient flow for the staff while also making the building simple and enjoyable to use – resolving the issue of dealing with conferences and golfers simultaneously.
CLIENT | SH Camden Valley Pty
STATUS | In progress
LOCATION | Gledswood Hills, NSW
Located in one of Sydney’s fastest growing regions, this proposed community centre sits at the heart of a new and vibrant master planned residential community in Sydney’s South West Gledswood Hills precinct.
Sitting atop of a gentle undulating hill, overlooking the lush natural environment, a 27-hole golf course, and future tree lined residential streets, this centre has been designed to take full advantage of its beautiful surroundings and to promote a greener more enriching lifestyle for the local community. Boasting a large outdoor swimming pool, BBQ facilities, fire pit, generous external deck areas, nature sensitive landscape design, and 400 sqm of internal area with screening room, games room, kitchen, bar, and lounge areas, the design caters to a wide variety of activities and family types.
The design approach adopted by Plus was to deliver landscape-sensitive architecture that would work with the natural contours of the terrain and encourage a clear and well-defined fluid path of movement through the site. Blurring the boundary between the indoor and outdoor environment, the centre features encouraging views and scenic vantage points throughout.

St Martins Community Centre
CLIENT | Christchurch Community Council
STATUS | Complete (2016)
LOCATION | Christchurch, NZ
Approximately 200 sqm in area, the size of a traditional detached house (and relatively modest by current standards), the St Martins Community Centre could easily be mistaken for a house. Located at the heart of Christchurch, the centre is an important addition to the city. Following the two earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, which claimed the original centre, the new building acts as an important healing device as much as a ‘new kid on the block’.
The design features a single storey with pitched roofs and was constructed with recycled bricks from houses in the surrounding area destroyed in the earthquakes. The arrangement of the recycled bricks suggests the making of patchwork quilts, something that brings the community together. Conceived as a home but with a library, meeting rooms and other community facilities, there is a deliberate strong sense of nurturing and domesticity throughout the space.
As well as creating a low-slung building with intimate spaces, Plus also allowed the centre to breathe, with an open-air pavilion and apertures in the walls to provide fluid and interconnected spaces. Private meeting rooms and thoughtfully curated spaces further create a domestic setting.
Soccer 5s Dandenong
CLIENT | Soccer 5s
STATUS | Complete (2015)
LOCATION | Dandenong, VIC
Plus were engaged to develop a flagship design for the Soccer5s concept in Australia. The clubhouse at Soccer 5s Dandenong is intended to act as a ‘lantern’ for the surrounding area and references the tough industrial context it sits within in the design language it adopts. The design incorporates 10 five a-side soccer pitches with associated clubhouse and car parking.
Situated between the East Link, heavy with trucks and adjacent huge sculptures, and the Logis Industrial Eco Park with its large-scale buildings, roadways and associated large service vehicles, Soccer 5s seeks to traverse this scale divide.
From a distance, the envelope of the building is contiguous, a supersized morphological ‘box’ that appears at home in its surroundings. Up close, the envelope breaks down to human scale. The result being that the building acts as a series of scales and truly belongs as a built form in a unique landscape – creating a strong icon for Soccer 5s club in Dandenong.
