Hawkstowe Lifestyle Centre, Hawkstowe

30.04.2007
The proposed development is a community clubhouse which includes facilities such as a tennis court, swimming pool, a function room and external terraces. The Hawkstowe Community Club is first seen as a strong, traditional built form on the hill at the end of the entry boulevard. The building is comprised of a series of timber containers resting on a low stone wall, creating a clever separation between communal and private. The structure is covered by a simple hip roof and together these elements form an abstraction of the vernacular farm house building common to the region.

The entry to the clubhouse is wide and welcoming providing both a gateway and a shelter for community events, while the floor plane is raised up to replicate the archetypal veranda space, overlooking the private terraces and gardens to the north. The materials palette will be formed by locally available materials such as basalt, drawing inspiration from the regional vernacular architecture.

Precinct Art, NewQuay Docklands

14.11.2004
The Art component is seen as one of the unifying elements in the development of the precinct. MAB Corporation has a strong history of support for young artists and as such the work of many artists forms an overlay in the fabric of the ongoing development of NewQuay.

Developers are also required to contribute 1% of construction costs as part of the development agreement with VicUrban for the placement of building and precinct art. Building and precinct art is seen as reflecting the differing experiences, range and diversity of a modern city.

The main nodal plaza projecting over the water forms one of two key nodal points within our 350m water frontage features a major artwork installation of 13 pieces by Adrian Mauriks.

Another dominant artwork presence on the promenade is an entry announcement to the Sant Elia waterfront apartments, a corten sculpture “Transitions” by Paul Dodds of Sush.

This retail area is also an arts precinct and work by Adrian Mauriks, Mathew McCarthy and Alexander Knox has already been incorporated to enrich the experience and the new gold wave wall screening.

Modular Community Centre

4.02.2003
First seen as a series of dark monoliths on the hill at the end of the entry boulevard.

The building is comprised of a series of tall dark containers standing between low stone walls, recalling standing stones on some significant community meeting place. The narrow gorge like entrance and corridors lead out into sunlit rooms beyond.

Floor planes are modulated to provide the interior with a number of special experiences – some are raised up to provide archetypal veranda spaces, while others flow seamlessly out into the private terraces and gardens to the north.

The materials palette would be formed locally available materials such as basalt, drawing inspiration from the regional vernacular architecture.
