Under Construction – Armada, Nott St Apartments & 101 Bay St Port Melbourne

10.11.2011
Armada, Nott St                                Inspired by its Port-side surroundings, the 6 storey design is informed by the characteristics of both modern day and historic shipping ports – ocean setting, towering cranes, cargo shipping containers, historic sailing ships and modern day cruise ships – whilst simultaneously overlaying a contemporary architectural language to the design. The distinctive façade framing is influenced by the skyscraping cranes scattered across the city Ports.  Dark glass is set back behind the façade to generate layering and depth.

Contrastingly, the Eastern side of the building is oriented towards the CBD with picturesque views of the city skyline.

Nestled in the hub of vibrant Port Melbourne, Armada offers the latest in contemporary bayside living.

With a central Nott Street address, Armada is a short stroll from both the beach and Bay Street shopping strip, and only 10 minutes from the CBD by light rail. Armada offers the astute investor prime positioning in one of Melbourne’s premier inner-city suburbs and strikes the rarely attained balance between design, setting and location.

Incorporating the swooping, sinuous lines of modern day maritime architecture by Plus Architecture, Armada comprises 42 apartments over six levels – a combination of one and two bedrooms.  Offering the perfect combination of city and bayside living in conjunction with superior design qualities – this is Armada.

101 Bay St                                                Situated in the heart of Port Melbourne on Bay street with retail, cafes, restaurants, supermarkets and Port Melbourne Beach close by.

The site has a historically significant façade in the Bay Street frontage exemplifying Port Melbourne’s early industrious heritage.

The design is based on Port Melbourne’s evolution from bay side working suburb to present day revitalized and gentrified destination for a future generation of inhabitants and uses.Port Melbourne is a place of contrasts through out its history. In the past it was a place of dynamic industry, working docks, large warehouses and tightly planned tiny terrace workers cottages. Wide roads and train tracks sit adjacent to side streets and laneways.

Today Port Melbourne is going through a process of gentrification and redevelopment at such a speed that is unlike anywhere else in Melbourne. Warehouses and industry now compete with luxury waterside developments for sites. Narrow terrace houses sit alongside glossy mansions and new parks. Anew generation of younger white collar professionals are moving into what was once a blue collar only territory.

Port Melbourne is a dynamic place of contrasts; scale, texture and demographics. This state of contrasts informed the starting point of the design response.
