Secret Doors at Plus Architecture – Plywood nugget door
16.07.2011Whitehaven Harbour Design Competition
15.10.2010| Plus Architecture recently entered the International Whitehaven Harbour Design Competition, in Cumbria, England, UK.
The site presents a unique opportunity to revive Whitehaven’s former working port into an important part of this special town. Whitehaven is one of the finest examples of planned Georgian architecture in Europe. Inspired by the local heritage of Whitehaven; our submission focused on a contemporary design solution to respect the existing conditions. The design emphasises the local character of the townscape. Just as St James church and Whitehaven Castle mark the eastern edges of the town; the proposed project marks the border between the harbour and the old town, acting as a threshold between the two. With an approximate budget of £10m, the project consists of 42 waterfront facing apartments, including 3 penthouses and over 5000m2 of commercial area. |

01/09/10, ‘Secret Spaces’, Living by Design
1.09.2010| ‘Secret doors have long been a favourite of fiction writers and film makers. Disguised as bookcases or fireplaces, they have led to secret rooms and passageways-and all manner of mystery.
What piqued the imagination of Craig Yelland as a child was the television series Get Smart…as director of Plus Architecture, he has turned his fascination into reality for his clients. In south Yarra office, a timber floor and the wall panelling have the same joins and connect seamlessly. But the wall is actually two big timber panels that pivot to expose a boardroom’. |

Egg Chair by Emma Selzer
15.08.2010| The egg chair, designed by Plus student Emma Selzer is an innovative pivoting pod that maximizes privacy. The egg chair is located in Society’s recently completed business centre in South Yarra. The brief was to design a funky space that would allow residents to access and use computers. Emma created pods, each with an inbuilt desk and chair.
The main concept behind the design was to maximize privacy. To generate privacy, Emma used the form to act as a shield and protect the inhabitant from outside viewers. Plywood was used to construct the pods. There are approximately 110 pieces of plywood used in each pod. The pieces were laser cut from a 3D model to ensure accuracy. Each piece is stacked onto the next using glue and screws. A bolt and swivel have been attached underneath the pod to secure it firmly in position, and the swivel allows the pod to pivot encouraging the pod user to face any direction. |
