10.06.2010| ‘”When you are an expert in a small market, it’s volatile,” said Craig Yelland, a director of Plus Architecture. “When the market goes pair-shaped, you’re in real trouble”.
Now, Plus Architecture is back in business, its staff level is back to 50.The company has more than 800 apartments, 8000 square metres of office space and 4000sqm of retail under construction in locations ranging from Port Melbourne, Tooronga, and St Kilda, to NewQuay and South Yarra. Mr Yelland makes jobs work financially, while the other directors, Ian Briggs looks after design and Rainer Strunz runs the documentation team. One recently completed project, Society in South Yarra, is the first larger building to have small, custom-designed units. This is the first time the banks would finance projects where the minimum unit was 40 sqm…The Plus directors are adamant that good design sells.’ |

Greville St, Prahran
1.06.2010| The latest Plus Architecture project to receive planning approval is Greville Street, Prahran.
Located behind shops at 110 – 142 Greville Street, the development has been to split into two distinct ‘wrapped’ volumes above ground level and will include a mix of approximately 60 one and two bedroom apartments with a top level of three bedroom apartments. An urbane hub of fashion and art, the design reflects both the visual culture of Prahran and the cycle of renewal that constantly revitalises the local streetscape. |

Because people have learnt to live in smaller spaces we’ve created spaces to support their lifestyles”, Mr Briggs says.
These may include a communal dining room available for hire, a ground floor cafe that delivers to the apartments, a laundromat and shared cars to rent. All user-pays, they give residents extras they can access as they need them. “When you have everything you need around you, you don’t need huge spaces…What I want to do is provide an option for young families where they can buy a three-bedroom apartment with outdoor spaces and access to a park. It will be hard to replace [the dream] of a three-bedroom house but [for Melbourne] to have a future, that shift needs to happen.”‘ |

11/01/10 ‘$1b Plan to Reshape Track and Build New Grandstand’, The Herald Sun
21.01.2010| Plus Architecture is currently working on the masterplan for the $1b redevelopment of Moonee ValleyRacing Club.
Plans for the restructured Moonee Valley racecourse include a four-tier grand stand with city skyline views, increased width of the new track and lengthening of the home straight, an infield stabling complex and capacity to hold crowds of 40,000 comfortably. As part of the proposed reconstruction of the site, plans include four residential towers around the existing boundary, with the current front end on to McPherson St sold for commercial, retail and residential development. MVRC Club chief executive Michael Browell said “the new track, layout, grandstand and amenities would be sensational…we’re actually going to make it more of an amphitheatre… we want to build a world-class night racing venue.” |
