Architect Designed….And Built

Taking an adventurous leap from architect to builder, the team at leading design practice, Plus Architecture has not only designed its new St Kilda Road offices but have also built it.

Located at Level 2, 448 St Kilda Road, Melbourne the design was put to the Plus Architecture team as an in-house competition for an innovative and cost effective office design, that reflects the youthful boutique architecture practice that is Plus Architecture. Creating a design that appealed to the entire design practice was a challenge well received.

Candice Ng who came up with the workstation solution, reused existing desks and transformed them into a cost effective modular system, is now physically screwing the workstations together. Graduate architect, Tim Clarke is doubling as a foreman and managing a team of staff on site.

Director of Plus Architecture, Craig Yelland, says the practice, established 13 years ago has continued to grow and now has staff of close to 50. “It is an exciting time for the team to be moving to our own headquarters, that they have actually been designed and built by us is fantastic.  Putting a competition to the staff to design the project was team building and provided them with a sense of ownership. Each team put together some very creative and exceptional designs that it made it difficult to choose a winner. The winning team presented something that is in Plus Architecture’s ethos referencing the natural and external environment and bringing a youthful fun but sophisticated atmosphere and design to our new office,” Craig Yelland said.
