‘Ian Briggs, From Plus Architecture-which played an important role in developing Docklands and Southbank-says considering how to support the creation of communities is a key part of its design strategy”.In our Society development [Bray Street, South Yarra] we created a range of community support facilities. Because people have learnt to live in smaller spaces we’ve created spaces to support their lifestyles”, Mr Briggs says.

These may include a communal dining room available for hire, a ground floor cafe that delivers to the apartments, a laundromat and shared cars to rent. All user-pays, they give residents extras they can access as they need them.

“When you have everything you need around you, you don’t need huge spaces…What I want to do is provide an option for young families where they can buy a three-bedroom apartment with outdoor spaces and access to a park. It will be hard to replace [the dream] of a three-bedroom house but [for Melbourne] to have a future, that shift needs to happen.”‘
